Welcome to the latest edition of HHK’s blog series dedicated to giving you up close and personal insight of the people behind our one hundred twenty-two year old institution.  The individuals we spotlight have dedicated themselves to continuing Hinman, Howard & Kattell’s motto … providing Peace of Mind Since 1901.

Richard H. Miller III is a second year Associate with Hinman, Howard & Kattell and is a member of HHK’s Litigation Practice Group.  Rick achieved his bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University and went on to receive his law degree from Syracuse University College of Law.  Rick began working with HH&K in May of 2022 after spending time with the U.S. Department of Justice, first as a law clerk and then as an honors attorney.

What made you decide to be an attorney?

I attended a summer camp for high school students contemplating a career in the medical profession.  While I was there, instead of having interest in the scientific or biological aspects of the profession, I was more concerned with concepts dealing with liability, regulation and medical policy.  I realized that I would rather work as an attorney and focus on legal practice.

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?

Hawaii – I wouldn’t incur any additional cell phone charges by remaining in the United States, and I’ve heard you really can’t beat those beaches.

If you could witness any event of the past, present or future, what would it be?

I love history, and it would be neat to witness the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri.  The Dr. Pepper exhibit would have been must-see.

What podcast are you listening to right now?

Defunctland – a podcast devoted to the history and development of theme park attractions of the past, present, and future.  I am definitely a theme park buff – my favorite is Epcot in Orlando, Florida.

What is the last movie you saw in the movie theater?

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Do you have any pets?

My family dog, Ralphie.  He’s an 8-year-old Havanese-Poodle Mix.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how funny would you say you are?  Would your family and friends agree with your assessment?

I am a “1” on the funny scale.  I am super serious, and my friends and family would agree.

If you were not an attorney, what would your job be?

Maybe a historian working at a museum.  I’ve also been told I should have a podcast, but I’m not sure how it would turn out, especially since I’m a “1” on the funny scale.

What is the best concert you have ever seen?

I saw Luke Combs last spring at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, PA.

What teacher or coach in high school made the biggest impact on you and why?

Jan DeAngelo.  He was always quick with a joke yet maintained an intolerance for misbehavior. I learned a great deal not just about singing through his chorus class and select choir, but also how to act professionally as I approached adulthood.

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Pizza.  There are so many different combinations of toppings, and the ability to include breakfast, lunch and dinner toppings.

Whatever car has the best gas mileage.
