Labor Day, the first Monday of September, is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being. Many Americans celebrate with parades, picnics and parties.
Fun Facts
- The first celebrated US Labor Day was on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City, planned by the Central Labor Union.
- Before becoming an official holiday nationwide, Labor Day was adopted state by state. Oregon was the first one to make it a statewide holiday in 1887, a full seven years before it was passed by Congress.
- President Grover Cleveland signed a bill into law on June 28, 1894, declaring Labor Day a national holiday.
