Dennis P. Sheehan joined Hinman, Howard & Kattell as special counsel in 2011, bringing with him more than 30 years of experience concentrated in civil litigation and labor and employment matters.
In the civil arena, Mr. Sheehan’s experience includes insurance defense work in both what is referred to as "first party claims," which are claims directly against insurance companies by their insureds, and also "third-party claims," claims made against the insurance carriers' insureds. On the plaintiffs' side, Mr. Sheehan has successfully prosecuted the claims of seriously injured individuals. He has also prosecuted or defended individuals and corporations in lawsuits involving complicated commercial and contract issues.
His experience with labor and employment matters has included providing representation in union and management disputes, human rights claims, and employee discipline and contract matters. The variety of labor cases he has handled has brought him before such bodies as the National Labor Relations Board, New York State Public Employment Relations Board, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, New York State Division of Human Rights, and both federal and New York State courts.
Mr. Sheehan is a past president of the Broome County Bar Association, and has also served as a member of its Board of Directors along with many of its committees, including its Grievance Committee, of which he is a current member. He has also served the New York State Bar Association, as a delegate to its House of Delegates representing the Broome County Bar Association, and as a member of the New York Conference of Bar Leaders. Mr. Sheehan also serves as a lecturer for the Broome County Bar Association's Continuing Legal Education Program on such topics as ethics, civil litigation issues and employment law. Additionally, for a number of years, Mr. Sheehan has volunteered his services to the courts serving as an arbitrator for the Sixth Judicial District’s arbitration program resolving attorney/client fee disputes.
Mr. Sheehan was born and raised in Binghamton and has been actively involved in his community, including serving as the President of Catholic Charities of Broome County and, for more than 25 years, being an active member of its Board of Directors. He has been honored with the designation of Member Emeritus. He has also served as a member of the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse and Broome County Catholic Youth Organization. Mr. Sheehan also greatly enjoyed his time as a youth basketball, baseball and soccer coach with his local civic association.
